A Legacy of Excellence: The History and Commitment of N.F. Field Abstract Company

In the late 1890s, N.F. Field, an attorney based in Fergus Falls, initiated the preparation of abstracts of title as part of his legal practice. In 1920, N.F. Field Abstract Company was incorporated, establishing the foundation for the business that continues to operate under its original name.

N.F. Field’s son, Cyrus Field, also an attorney, assumed ownership of the company in the late 1940s. With a practice centered on corporate law, Cyrus brought on Neal Morstad as a managing partner to oversee the daily operations of the abstract company. Their partnership, which lasted nearly 50 years, facilitated the company’s growth in both size and scope. Eventually, Neal Morstad’s sons, Tom and Jim, joined the business, reinforcing a family-oriented culture essential to the company’s success. This sense of family extends to several long-term staff members who play a crucial role in addressing the complex issues that frequently arise in real estate transactions.

While the preparation and updating of abstracts of title remain core aspects of the business, the importance of title insurance and real estate closings has significantly increased in today’s real estate market. With constantly evolving regulations and compliance requirements, our staff is dedicated to staying informed and current.
